Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by Semiole and Mikasuki Indians. After being used for hunting in the 19th and oil drilling in the 20th century, Big Cypress National Preserve was declared a protected area in 1974.<\/strong> Later, 232 square miles of land were added to the preserve, and the touristic infrastructure was further developed.<\/p>\n
